چکیده

Total spondylectomy has been performed previously for tumour. In 1966 a complete vertebra (the fourth lumbar) affected by a giant-cell tumour was removed in a two-stage surgical procedure : the body of the vertebra was extirpated two weeks after excision of the posterior parts (Li#{232}vre,Darcy, Pradat, Camus, B#{233}nichou, Attali and Joublin 1968). In 1968, after laminectomy, all remaining parts of three adjacent vertebrae (the eleventh and twelfth thoracic and first lumbar) were removed together with a giant-cell tumour (Stener and Johnsen 1971). Later in the same year the second lumbar vertebra was excised in two patients because of malignant tumour (Hamdi 1969). This paper describes total removal of the seventh and partial removal of the sixth and eighth thoracic vertebrae of a forty-nine-year-old man with a chondrosarcoma arising from the seventh thoracic vertebra.

Total en bloc spondylectomy of the eleventh thoracic vertebra following denosumab therapy for the treatment of a giant cell tumor

Although denosumab has been reported to induce effective clinical results with respect to tumor shrinkage in a short-term follow-up clinical study, total spondylectomy is recognized as the treatment of choice for eradicating giant cell tumors (GCTs) of the spine. The present study reports the case involving a GCT in the 11th thoracic vertebra complicated by idiopathic scoliosis and treated usin...

Major complications following total en bloc spondylectomy for giant-cell tumor

The authors present the case of a 32-year-old Caucasian female with a giant-cell tumor of the eighth thoracic vertebra, causing unremitting pain, segmental kyphosis and imminent local instability. A total en bloc spondylectomy by a posterior-only approach was performed, complemented with anterior-column reconstruction with a titanium mesh and structural allograft, as well as pedicle screw fixat...

A Case of C5 Vertebral Chordoma in a 73-Year-Old Patient with More Than 8 Years of Follow-Up after Total Piecemeal Spondylectomy

Chordoma arising from the cervical spine is rare and the traditional long-term prognosis is typically poor. Total en bloc spondylectomy with a wide margin is generally accepted to be the most appropriate management for thoracic and lumbar malignant tumors. However, this method is still challenging for the cervical spine because of the proximity of the tumor to the vertebral arteries and neural ...

Total En Bloc Spondylectomy for Lumbar Renal Cell Carcinoma and Review of the Literature

Introduction: Total en bloc spondylectomy (TES) is gaining increasing favour as a treatment of choice for cancers of the spine that are resistant to radiological and chemotherapeautic intervention such as renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Until recently, RCC of the lumbar spine has presented a surgical challenge due to anatomical and vascular constraints. The development of the combined posterior-ant...
